Paris gets cut in jail time

Famous-for-being-famous heiress Paris Hilton will not serve her full 45-day jail sentence after Los Angeles police cut her stay due to "good behaviour".

Instead she will spend 23 days in a special needs housing unit, which will keep her out of the general prison population.

Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County sheriff's department, told Reuters: "This was decided because of her high profile."

He did not reveal whether special security measures were being taken on behalf of Paris but warned news agencies against trying to get pictures of the jailbird.

"This is not an e-ticket ride at Disneyland. This is a serious matter. Anyone who takes advantage of this situation will face appropriate consequences," Mr Whitmore told Agence France Press.

In her special needs housing unit at the Century Regional Detention Centre in California, Paris will join a facility that contains just 12 other inmates, but she will still have to share a cell.

Following the reduction in her sentence, Paris has dropped her appeal.

The troubles for the 26-year-old heiress to the Hilton hotel empire started when she had her driving revoked after drunk driving, but then later this year she was caught at the wheel and received a prison sentence.
