X Factor - The Afghan version, 'Afghan Star' receives complaints

16 January 2008 - The Afghan Star's third series causes trouble

The 'Afghan Star' has received complaints this week. The Afghan version of the X Factor has offended some people who say it offends Islamic sharia law.

The show attracts millions of visitors, over 90% of Afghan viewers watched last years final and millions in Pakistan, India and the United Arab Emirates also tuned in to see Najibullah Mahmoodi crowned champion.

The Daily Star has reported that holy men have asked the President to take 'Afghan Star' off the TV. The protesters believe that the
"Afghan Star encourages immorality among the people and is against sharia law...The unrestrained programmes on TV have angered and prompted the scholars to react."

The Daily Star reports that President Karzai has asked his information minister to investigate.
