Man who chased Coronation Street's Bev Callard gets curfew

15 October 2007 - A man has received a six-month curfew as a result of chasing Coronation Street star Beverley Callard in his vehicle.

Imran Alam, 23, was accused of trying to intimidate the soap star in a road rage incident in which he followed her Mercedes convertible for two miles while throwing objects at it.

Manchester Magistrates' Court heard how Callard was cut up and forced to brake on her way to Granada Studios for work.

Alam did not show up for his trial due to illness, but it went ahead in his absence. He was given the curfew, which states that he cannot leave his house between 22:00 and 07:00 BST, as well as seven points on his license. He must also pay £350 in costs.

"It must be absolutely terrifying for people to endure this sort of behaviour. It will not be tolerated," court chairman Neil Farnell said during the sentencing, according to Digital Spy.

However, Alam expressed his unhappiness with the decision and explained that he had no idea who Callard was, saying: "I have never watched Coronation Street in my life."

Callard, who plays Liz McDonald, joined the soap in 1989.
