David Tennant

Dr Who leads pack of TV nominees

15 October 2007 - Popular BBC series Doctor Who has received three nominations at the National TV Awards.

The sci-fi show starring David Tennant has been nominated in the same categories it has won previously, including Most Popular Drama, Most Popular Actress and Most Popular Actor.

Other programmes in the running in the dramatic category include Life on Mars, The Bill and Shameless.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman will be competing against Kara Tointon and Lacey Turner from EastEnders, as well as Coronation Street's Sue Cleaver.

Although David Tennant is a favourite to win, he will have to fight off challenges from Coronation Street's Anthony Cotton, EastEnders star Charlie Clements and Hollyoaks' James Sutton.

A new category called Most Popular Talent Show will see Any Dream Will Do, X Factor, Dancing on Ice, Britain's Got Talent and Strictly Come Dancing go head-to-head.

Host Sir Trevor McDonald told the Daily Mirror: "It has been a controversial year for the industry, but the awards are a celebration of TV at its most popular. The variety of nominees shows the remarkable range of the programmes we all watch."

The awards show will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on October 31st.
