Sarah Lancashire takes on the Time Lord

12 October 2007 - Doctor Who is recruiting a number of guest stars for its new series, which begins next spring.

The BBC One show has revealed that former Coronation Street actress Sarah Lancashire will play powerful business-type Miss Foster.

Lancashire, who played barmaid Raquel, was married to Curly Watts on the ITV soap and has also appeared in other TV shows Clocking Off, Where The Heart Is and Bloomin' Marvellous.

She said that she is excited about appearing in the science fiction series, and will be on screen alongside comedian Catherine Tate.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be in Doctor Who. It's a brilliant episode and I'm looking forward to taking the Time Lord on," Lancashire commented.

Doctor Who has proved to be a popular Saturday night show on BBC1. Next spring's series will be the fourth of the new variety.

It was announced earlier this month that Christopher Ryan, who played the super-cool Mike in the classic comedy The Young Ones, will also be guest starring in series four.

Ryan will play the role of a Sontaran leader and filming for the episode will begin in the next few weeks.
