Doctor Who fan's celery fortune
21 November 2007 - A 'Doctor Who' fan has spent £5,500 on a stick of celery autographed by former Doctor, Peter Davison.
Australian fan Dimity Telfer, 21, bid for the plastic vegetable on internet auction site eBay because it had been worn by the 'Doctor Who' star as a lapel in the hit sci-fi show.
Dimity told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "I couldn't let an opportunity like that get away from me and it's for a great cause. I got into 'Doctor Who' in 2005 and I've been hooked. Peter Davison is my favourite."
The BBC put the signed celery stick up for auction in aid of children's charity 'Children In Need' last week, with bidding starting at just 99p.
But after ten days of furious bidding, with 87 offers placed, Dimity emerged victorious with the top bid of £5,500 - the equivalent of AUS $12,760.
Davison played the Time Lord in the cult show between 1981 and 1984, but has made various comeback appearances, most recently joining the current Doctor, David Tennant, for the 'Children In Need' special last week (16.11.07).
Davison's incarnation of The Doctor pinned celery to his lapel as his trademark.
