Big Brother Celebrity Hijack - Politicians praise John Loughton

30 January 2008 - Big Brother Celebrity Hijack winner John Loughton has received praise from his local Labour councillors following his victory.

Edinburgh politicians have called on Lord Provost George Grubb to convey Leith authority's congratulations to Loughton and his family following the finale of the programme.

Leith councillor Gordon Munro told the Scotsman that Loughton provided a refreshing change to celebrity culture and that it was "heartening" to see his good working-class values recognised on the show.

"John is a credit to his family and the community of north Edinburgh. His latest success deserves recognition by the city he loves," he added.

Upon entering the Big Brother house, Loughton was chairman of the Scottish Youth Parliament and had also received a community involvement award for his voluntary work with the elderly in projects in Muirhouse and Pilton.

Loughton was also actively involved with the Young Edinburgh initiative which brings together the city's youth services strategy.

Labour group leader Ewan Aitken commented: "John is symbolic of the success of the Young Edinburgh initiative."

Following his appearance in Big Brother Celebrity Hijack, Loughton has been labelled by many as the Big Brother Braveheart.

While on the show, he told Big Brother that he wished to see a change in attitude towards red-haired people and that he was proud to be a true red-haired Scot.
