Liz faces jail for wedding faux-pas
Actress Liz Hurley's lavish wedding in March to husband Arun Nayar may see her in jail for breaking Hindu customs.
Allegations from a devout Hindu, Vishnu Khandelwhal, include that the 41-year-old Austin Powers actress refused to remove her shoes at the ceremony in Jodphur, that she drunk alcohol and that the couple's public kissing indicated that they failed to "behave soberly".
Legal proceedings have been launched which, if Liz is found guilty, could result in a jail term of three years.
Prosecuting lawyer Hasti Mal Saraswat said: "This was a marriage for commercial purposes, but at the cost of religious feelings. We are using the Hello! pictures to prove our case."
Liz and Arun had sold Hello! the exclusive rights to cover the wedding for $5 million (£2.5 million), but this may be eaten into by any fine from the Indian courts.
However, Liz will not find out her fate for a while yet as the Guardian suggests it could be months before the dispute is resolved due to the "notoriously slow" Indian legal system.
