Strictly Come Dancing - Kate Garraway vs Gabby Logan
5 November 2007 - Strictly Come Dancing stars Gabby Logan, Kenny Logan, Kate Garraway and her dance partner Anton Du Beke spoke to Ben Shephard and Penny Smith on GMTV.
Here's the full interview:
Ben Shephard: We're joined by the star of Strictly Come Dancing Gabby Logan. She's hung up her dancing shoes, to the judge's disapproval, to the audience's disapproval. And the person with the lowest score ever made it through!
Kate Garraway: Oh shut up!
Ben Shephard: There she is, they're here together. Fortunately they seem to be talking.
Kate Garraway: Don't pretend to like me Gabby. We had a full blown mud wrestle outside. The camera boys loved it.
Ben Shephard: That will be on the website later. They're also here with their partners of differing sorts. Her husband, but also rival, Kenny Logan is here, who is still in, and Anton Du Beke who is still in as well. We'll be talking to them in just a moment. First let's have a look at what a few famous faces have to say about the matter.
Video plays of celebs talking about the show.
Ben Shephard: Gabby, I was there on Saturday night. I thought you did a fantastic job, but it was quite a shock. I could sense in the audience there was quite a shock. No one more shocked than you and your partner though?
Gabby Logan: I don't know about 'nobody more shocked' I think everybody was fairly shocked to see Penny and I in the dance off because we weren't in the bottom half and we got sucked into there by the apathy of the voters or whatever else you want to call it. I don't know. Maybe they didn't like us. So we were in the bottom two and we danced off and yes, I was shocked. I was loving it so much, I loved the training, I loved the Saturdays, I loved the show. I'm a massive fan of the show, I have been for a long long time. I was supposed to do the show last year and I couldn't. As Bruce said to me: "You were supposed to do this for two years, you must be so disappointed." That's why I think l it felt even harder to take.
Ben Shephard: Did it make it worse when everyone comes up and says: "I can't believe you've gone. I expected you to do so much better."
Gabby Logan: No, it doesn't make it worse. I hope after this Saturday when we've had another show we can move on. And Kate and Ken will still be in it.
Kate Garraway: Can I just say, Kenny is equally as rubbish and you're married to her! You must feel dreadful!
Ben Shephard: Hold on Kate, I was there. He's not equally as rubbish. I think it's fair to say that Kenny is doing his best. He did vaguely manage to dance in some capacity.
Gabby Logan: This is about the voters, what the voters want to see and what they want to keep in the competition. It's a merry mix isn't it? It's a box of Quality Street, there are all sorts in there and this week I think we'll probably have another surprise.
Ben Shephard: From your point of view Kate, we've been living this with you and we were all excited you managed to get through last week because we're desperately hoping that you can deliver and do a decent dance.
Kate Garraway: Whose side are you on Ben?
Ben Shephard: Is there part of you feels a bit guilty? Or are you thinking 'No this is a public vote'.
Kate Garraway: Listen, I did feel dreadful because I know how much it meant to her and I know how hard she'd worked. To be honest we're all working really hard. I think ironically we actually put more hours of rehearsal in than anybody else, which is a little bit depressing. We are working really hard. On paper we're really working as hard as we can. You can only do your best can't you?
Penny Smith: Can I just say that we have been inundated with calls and most of them mentioning the word 'humiliation'. Why do they keep on Kate? Do they like her being humiliated every week?
Kate Garraway: I don't know. I want to stay in the competition. I'm having a fantastic time. I'm enjoying every minute of it and I don't feel like its torture. I'm really enjoying it and I just think dancing is fun.
Ben Shephard: And I think that's coming across. Obviously, Kenny you're still in and you've had to cope with the wife being booted out on the weekend as well. How was that because I know the two of you are very competitive with each other? I heard Gabby, you were going round taking notes and offering advice on his dance routine.
Gabby Logan: No, I haven't seen his routine this week. We weren't competitive at all. The show wants to make out a phony war between us.
Kenny Logan: She didn't have to worry about beating me.
Gabby Logan: Well I obviously did.
Ben Shephard: How about your kids though, how have they coped this week?
Gabby Logan: Oh my little girl could tell something was wrong this Sunday, due to the fact that I was crying all day.
Kenny Logan: At one point she said 'Is daddy going dancing?' and I said 'yes'. Then she said 'Is mummy going dancing?' and I said 'no' and she said 'Oh mummy!'
Ben Shephard: So they know?
Gabby Logan: I have to pretend. I'm like one of those men that loses their job in their twenties and pretend until their fifties. I just pretend I'm going out. With my dress and shoes on.
Kenny Logan: She sits in Starbucks for 4 hours.
Ben Shephard: Obviously you've got to focus on this weekend. Anton, it's the foxtrot. It's a proper dance. How's Kate getting on this week?
Anton Du Beke: She's doing very well but saying that, each week that we've been rehearsing she's been developing really well. She's been improving, the key is as long as she improves. We need to just get over that stumbling block of the main show. To step over the threshold of a live show is very difficult. It's a different world.
Ben Shephard: But Kate has to deal with live TV more or less every day.
Kate Garraway: It's different though.
Anton Du Beke: It's all very well you sitting there.
Kate Garraway: I'll tell you what it's like. You know like at school when you were really bad at maths? It's like somebody's called you out at school and said 'You got bottom at maths, now do it in front of the school'. And you just want to go: "Hello ten million people. I'm really bad at this. Why don't you watch me!"
Gabby Logan: Also when you think about the dance off. Not enough people vote for you, they don't like you and then you have to do it again.
Penny Smith: Kenny's got a secret weapon haven't you? You're wearing a kilt.
Kate Garraway: He's wearing a kilt and apparently not a lot else.
Ben Shephard: It's the paso doble this weekend which involves a lot of waving around of stuff doesn't it?
Anton Du Beke: It's the knowledge I love. 'That paso doble, quite a lot of waving around'.
Ben Shephard: It is isn't it? Is it the kilt or the cape that's going to get waved?
Kate Garraway: Well I'll try and keep the kilt on because that could be quite scary. The kilt will stay on and I'll have a bit of a cape back stage.
Gabby Logan: I've seen his cape work.
Ben Shephard: Your partner was very upset last week.
Gabby Logan: James, lovely James. He was gutted.
Kate Garraway: And he's such a tough guy.
Gabby Logan: He is isn't he? He's a real lad. But we were getting on so well. We were really starting to gel and I think that's the important thing with dance. You can't fake that chemistry early doors. That has to evolve doesn't it?
Anton Du Beke: That's one of the lovely things about this show, the developing relationships of the couple. That's one of the lovely parts of the show. You really do develop a really lovely bond.
Kate Garraway: I can't bear the idea that I'm not going to spend all day with you if we go out this week.
Gabby Logan: It's horrible.
Kate Garraway: Would you quite like a break now?
Anton Du Beke: No, I'm probably going to hang around outside your house. Until the restraining order comes in.
Gabby Logan: Kate Garraway is not going anywhere this week. I'll put my mortgage on it.
Ben Shephard: I want to know who Gabby thinks might win?
Gabby Logan: Oh I think after last week, these two in the final. There are some great dancers in the competition and there are some really fun dancers in the competition.
Kate Garraway: What about a Kenny and Kate final? Christmas Eve.
Anton Du Beke: Kenny and Kate Christmas special.
Gabby Logan: Special K final they'll call it.
Ben Shephard: Thanks so much for coming in Gabby.
Kate Garraway: Andrew Castle's coming this Saturday. He's lending his support bless him.
Ben Shephard: In a very stern fashion I should imagine as well. Thanks all very much for coming in. Best of luck Kenny, Kate, Anton. Gabby will you be there?
Gabby Logan: Of course, cheering Kate, Kenny and the rest of the crew on.
