Elton caps off star-studded Diana memorial
Sir Elton John topped the bill at Wembley Stadium at the Diana memorial concert, but did not perform his reworked version of Candle In The Wind.
The 60-year-old singer originally penned the song in tribute to Marilyn Monroe, but rewrote the lyrics after Princess Diana's death and performed this new version for the one and only time at her funeral in 1997.
Perhaps choosing to keep that rendition as a special tribute to his friend Diana, Elton closed Sunday's six-hour gig with a four-song set including favourites such as Tiny Dancer and Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting).
Earlier in the day he had opened the tribute concert with a performance of Your Song.
The Concert for Diana had been organised by her sons, Princes William and Harry, to pay tribute to their mother's life on what would have been her 46th birthday and the brothers hit the stage to tell the crowd that it had been "the most perfect way of remembering her".
Elton was joined by acts including veteran crooner Tom Jones, reformed boyband Take That and the ever-touring Status Quo, while newer acts such as Lily Allen, Joss Stone and Kanye West also performed to the 63,000 crowd at the recently-opened stadium.
Money raised from the concert will go to charities including the Princess' Memorial Fund which works with communities affected by landmines or plagued by HIV/Aids.
