Corrie's bad lad David turns emotional

10 September 2007 - Jack Shepherd, who plays teen David Platt on Coronation Street, has admitted that he had to put in a lot of effort to cry on screen.

While filming a story in which his onscreen niece was brought to hospital after swallowing ecstasy tablets, Jack said he was hard-pressed to show enough emotion.

"I couldn't just turn on the waterworks. For some of the scenes I had to start from nothing and it would take me up to 20 minutes to burst into tears," he told the Sun.

He added that he was jealous of Tina O'Brien - who plays his character's sister Sarah - and her ability to "turn on the tears just like that".

The 19-year-old actor explained that David, who is known for his wayward behaviour, is actually upset after Bethany accidentally swallows the pills that he had hidden in her doll.

"He is absolutely devastated by what's happened and deeply, deeply sorry. But because of what he's done he's disowned by the Platts and blacklisted," Jack said.

The young man also discussed his sadness following the news that Tina O'Brien will be leaving the Corrie cast.

Tina, who has played Sarah-Louise Platt for the past eight years, will next be seen playing Cinderella in a Manchester pantomime this Christmas.
