Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie Christie get SAG honour

28 January 2008 - Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie Christie were big winners at the 14th Annual Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) Awards last night (27.01.08).

Day-Lewis took home the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for 'There Will Be Blood', while fellow Brit Julie won the female equivalent for her role in 'Away From Her'.

In his acceptance speech, Day-Lewis paid tribute to Heath Ledger - the 'Brokeback Mountain' star who was found dead in his New York apartment last week.

Speaking via satellite, the tearful actor said: "There isn't anything to say other than to express one's regret to his family and his friends and to say from the bottom of one's heart - that I'm sorry for their trouble.

"I didn't know him. I have a strong impression I would have liked him very much, as a person, if I had. I had already marvelled at some of his work. And looked forward to the work he would do in the future."

Other winners at the ceremony, which was held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, included Javier Bardem who walked away with Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of killer Anton Chigurh in Joel and Ethan Coen's 'No Country For Old Men'.

Ruby Dee, 83, received the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role after starring alongside Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe in the critically-acclaimed 'American Gangster'.

In the TV categories, Kevin Kline and Queen Latifah were recognised for their Outstanding Performances in a Television Movie or Miniseries.

Despite not having been on air since June 2007, Mafia crime drama 'The Sopranos' took home two awards.

James Gandolfini, who played mob boss Tony Soprano, received the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series accolade, while his on screen wife Edie Falco landed the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series gong.

Upon accepting her award, Falco joked: "This was so not meant to happen!"

Angelina Jolie, who left the ceremony empty-handed after being nominated for her portrayal of Mariane Pearl in 'A Mighty Heart', fuelled rumours she is pregnant by wearing a voluminous vintage Hermes gown which hid her stomach and showed off her breasts, which seemed to be larger than usual.

Angelina attended the ceremony with long-term partner Brad Pitt, with who she has three adopted children and a biological daughter.
