Andrew Lloyd Webber

My Fair Lady on its way to BBC?

1 October 2007 - Classic musical My Fair Lady could be set to be the next talent competition show on the BBC, according to reports.

Andrew Lloyd Webber will again help guide hopefuls as they compete for the chance to play Eliza Doolittle - a Cockney flower-seller in Edwardian times who is shaped into a high-class lady, the Sun claims.

A source told the publication: "There were several ideas on the table but eventually we whittled them down to West Side Story and My Fair Lady.

"We decided that as we had searched for a male lead last year with Joseph, it was probably right to hunt for a female one next."

The insider added that the BBC is "excited" to bring this "hugely popular musical" to viewers.

Previously musical talent hits for the corporation have included How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? - which centred on The Sound of Music - and Any Dream Will Do, which focused on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The BBC has not yet confirmed the decision, as it is still in talks with producers.

My Fair Lady was famously made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1964.
