Beach Boys - Brian Wilson's surf fear

7 January 2008 - Brian Wilson is "afraid" of surfing.

The former Beach Boys star - whose hits include 'Surfin' USA', 'Catch a Wave' and 'Surfin' Safari' - developed a phobia of the water sport after his first attempt nearly ended in a nasty accident.

When asked whether he would have a surfing session while he is in Sydney, Australia, Brian replied: "No way, I'd be so afraid. I tried it one time and the board almost hit me in the head. It missed my head by two inches. That was the end of Brian Wilson the surfer."

The 65-year-old singer is set to open the Sydney Festival 2008 with a free concert in front of 40,000 fans today (05.01.08).

The music legend admits he still gets nervous before a big show.

He said: "It feels scary to go out in front of all those people but it makes me want to perform well. And I'm a 65-year-old man who can still perform."
