Homemade Burgers

Create your own burgers

You've bothered taking the barbecue out of the shed, so why waste time with tasteless economy burgers which end up the size of a ten pence piece when you can create mouth-watering burgers from scratch.

You can create four chunky burgers from our great home-made recipe.

Ingredients:

• 450g minced beef, or minced lamb
• 75g finely chopped onion
• 1⁄2 tsp chopped thyme
• 1⁄2 tsp chopped parsley
• 1 egg beaten
• 10g butter
• 1 pinch black pepper
• 4 tbsp olive oil for coating/frying

Method

Melt the butter in a frying pan then add the onion. Fry over a gentle heat until the onion is soft, leave to cool.
Mix the mince with the herbs, onions and egg in a bowl and season with pepper.

Shape the mix into hamburgers – the bigger the better! You can cook the burgers immediately but if you have the time, leave them in the fridge for 1 hour to firm up.

Lightly coat the burgers with oil to ensure they don't stick to the grill, then keep turning until they're fully cooked.

Cut into them to check the meat has cooked – if they're still a bit pink, leave them on for a few minutes more

Once the burgers are ready serve in ciabatta bread with a crisp side salad and a dollop of relish.

Twist: To spice up your burgers, swap the parsley and thyme for chopped chilli and coriander!
