Box office record for Shrek the Third
Shrek The Third has had the biggest ever opening weekend of an animated film after traking in a massive £16.6million!
The threequel was released on 536 screens and has now taken almost £20million in the UK alone. This follows the hugely successful international openings over the last month.
The film was launched in the US in May with a record breaking $122m three day opening weekend, making it the third biggest opening in US history and the biggest opening for an animated film ever in the US.
It becomes Paramount Pictures UK's highest ever opening, as well as the third biggest UK opening of all time (behind the second and third Harry Potter films), leading this summer's blockbusters.
The third instalment in the Shrek series sees the loveable green ogre recruit Donkey and Puss In Boots for a new quest to bring back the rightful heir to the throne after Kind Harold dies.
The original casts from Shrek and Shrek 2 - Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Rupert Everett, Julie Andrews and John Cleese - reprise their roles in this third chapter of the Shrek story.
The new cast is headed up by Justin Timberlake as Artie with new turns from – Eric Idle as Merlin, Ian McShane as Captain Hook and American John Krasinski (The Office: An American Workplace) as Lancelot.
