Can you imagine? England would have gone on to beat West Germany in the World Cup that year. And retained it in 1990 because the German hoodoo would not have existed. Then we’d have won Euro 96 as well, for the same reason. Fact. Fact. Fact.

It’s probably tough to claim compensation for anything after that, but you’re still looking at two World Cups and one European Championships in a 10-year period. Throw in the subsequent boost to the English economy over that period, and it's a lump sum that’d make Man City’s owners look like Aldi-shoppers. Hell, we could even afford Fabio Capello’s salary.
