The Bill - Sergeant Dale Smith (ALEX WALKINSHAW)

The Bill - Smithy tries to help an old gangster

Wednesday, 9 April 2008

Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and PC Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) respond to a call where they discover a bloodied elderly man, later identified as Johnnie Jackson (Edward Woodward), once a notorious East End gangster.

Will spots nearby teenager Disa Mirandello (Victoria Leung) who refuses to talk, but throws him her mobile phone which reveals footage of Johnnie being thrown out of a car and beaten up.

After checking himself out of St Hugh's, DS Max Turner (Christopher Fox) is paired up with Smithy to visit Johnnie at home and the officers are surprised when his grandson, Jacko (Sam Woodward) bursts in.

A furious Johnnie admits to the officers that Jacko deals drugs for someone who has connections to a dangerous man called Roger Hutton (Tim Woodward).

Later, Smithy and Max accompany Johnnie to a local cemetery to visit a family grave and when Johnnie becomes disorientated, Smithy is shocked by Max's lack of sympathy.

The case takes a surprising turn when officers discover that Hutton is Johnnie's illegitimate son, to whom Jacko owes a favour.

Johnnie tells Hutton that Jacko isn't cut out for a life of crime and begs Hutton to leave his grandson out of his dodgy dealings but Hutton refuses.

Hutton is eventually arrested in connection to a drug and prostitution racquet, but Sun Hill's celebrations are cut short when Smithy and Max respond to a call from Johnnie's house where they discover Jacko's body in a pool of blood.

This episode is on ITV1, Wednesday 9 April 2008 @ 8-9pm.
