New 'Strictly Come Dancing' ageism accusations

Monday, 3 August 2009

'Strictly Come Dancing' star Karen Hardy has sparked a new ageism row after being axed from the BBC show.

The broadcaster has already faced criticism - including over 1,500 complaints from fans of the ballroom dancing reality show - over its dismissal of judge Arlene Phillips, 66, who was dropped from the show in favour of pop singer Alesha Dixon, 30.

Now 39-year-old dancer Karen - who won the series dancing alongside cricketer Mark Ramprakash in 2006 - has been replaced with 25-year-old Lithuanian Katya Virshilas.

A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Karen is gone and it is no surprise seeing what is happening to older females at the BBC.

"As far as the bosses are concerned they are keeping things fresh and exciting but some may see it as ageism.

"The BBC were happy for her to leave. They made the decision. Despite Karen being one of the best dancers she is gone and it seems to be another sign that bosses want to make the series younger to try to take some of the 'X Factor' audience."

A Former British and World Champion dancer, Karen has proved consistently popular during her time on the show. It is also understood Hayley Holt, who only appeared in one series of 'Strictly Come Dancing' will also be replaced with Australian dancer Natalie Lowe, 28.

The BBC has declined to comment on its line up for the latest series of the show, which is due to start next month.

Sources linked to rival TV show 'The X Factor' last week blasted the BBC's apparent decision to try and make 'Strictly Come Dancing' appeal to a younger audience.

A source said: "Most young people aren't drawn to ballroom dancing. Nothing will change that."
