Arlene Phillips discriminated against?

'Strictly Come Dancing's Arlene Phillips is the victim of "age discrimination", according to a government minister.
Women and Equality Minister Harriet Harmon made the claim in the House of Commons yesterday (16.07.09), adding she hopes the BBC will reinstate the 66-year-old star - who was dropped in favour of 30-year-old pop star Alesha Dixon - to the TV talent show's judging panel.
Harriet said: "I think it's absolutely shocking that Arlene Phillips is not going to be a judge on 'Strictly Come Dancing'. And as Equality Minister, I am suspicious that there is age discrimination there.
"So I'd like to take the opportunity of telling the BBC - it is not too late, we want Arlene Phillips in the next edition of the show."
The BBC stated: "'Harriet Harman is entitled to her opinion, and it's great to know she is a fan of the show.
"Age had absolutely nothing to do with the decision to replace Arlene Phillips on the judging panel. The age ranges of the 'Strictly Come Dancing' presenters, judges and contestants taking part are clear evidence that this would not have played a part."
Fans of the show were furious when it was announced Arlene will no longer be appearing, with some even claiming they will boycott the next series.
Fellow judge Len Goodman has even queried the decision, claiming Arlene's departure might cause some of the show's older fans to stop tuning in.
