Wimbledon - Andy Murray gets some blue support
Thursday, 26 June 2008
As tennis fever grips the nation leading betting company Blue Square has unveiled the latest way for fans to get behind Andy Murray at this years Wimbledon – by creating a special batch of Scottish blue strawberries.
A group of 'Murray Maniacs' gathered on Murray Mount yesterday as the strawberries were showcased for the first time ahead of Andy's second round game against Xavier Malisse of Belgium.
With the help of a specialist fruit farmer Blue Square produced an initial batch of blue strawberries for this year's competition with the hope of making them a common sight for Wimbledon fortnight in the future as the whole of the UK gets behind the British number one.
Alan Alger, PR Manager for Blue Square, said: "As Wimbledon always creates a huge buzz around the country we decided to produce something special as a great way of people showing their support for Andy Murray.
"The fans on Murray Mount loved them so hopefully we can look to produce them in large enough numbers for everyone at the tournament to enjoy next year".
To coincide with the unveiling of the strawberries Blue Square has also released a special range of odds on Andy Murray for the tournament. They make him 28/1 fifth favourite to win Wimbledon for the first time.
Anyone looking for something a little more unusual can take advantage of a series of Blue Square specials - including odds of 250/1 that Andy will brighten up any rain delays by doing a duet with Sir Cliff Richard.
For the fashion conscious gambler, you can get odds of 100/1 that Andy will follow Federer and Sharapova in the unusual attire stakes by donning a kilt on court at some point during the Championships.
Alan Alger added: "This time last year we would have been offering much longer odds on someone creating blue strawberries than for Andy to win Wimbledon so it would be foolish to completely write off his chance this year".
