Forum hints at Champions League Draw fix
Friday, 14 March 2008
A member of an online forum at the Liverpool Echo allegedly revealed the outcome of today's Champions League Draw over an hour and a half BEFORE it took place.
The forum member posted a new topic to the to the Liverpoolecho.co.uk forum titled "Possible leak of draw" at 10.28am today.
In their first post under this new topic, the forum member, going by the name "confused" claimed they heard a rumour that bookies had stopped taking bets on the draw, and that it would pit Liverpool against Arsenal.
The member also correctly predicted the remaining ties, which saw Fenerbahce draw Chelsea and Manchester United draw Roma.
Forum experts believe it is virtually impossible to manipulate the time of the posting - which read 10.28am.
Supernatural powers
UEFA spokesman William Gaillard told the Liverpool Echo: "He must have supernatural powers. I know the people who did the draw and I am 150 per cent certain it is completely honest.
"You might be able to fool a computer but everyone can see the teams are picked out fairly this way."
Liverpool Echo web content manager Steve Harrison added: "The fact that a full prediction of the Champions League draw appeared on our forum site well before the live draw took place in Switzerland is quite remarkable.
"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this posting. As a result the site has experienced a dramatic increase in visitors."
It is reckoned the odds of predicting the outcome of such a draw are close to 200/1.
