England's Soccer Aid triumph

England won the ITV1 Soccer Aid tournament last night (07.09.08).
Celebrities and football legends played in a star-studded soccer match to raise money for UNICEF, with the England side beating the Rest of the World (ROW) team by four goals to three at London's Wembley Stadium.

Goals for England came from singer Jonathan Wilkes and former soccer players Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer, who scored twice. ROW goals were scored by 'Sex and the City: The Movie' star Gilles Marini and retired Italian footballer Paolo Di Canio, who also hit the net twice for his team.
Singer Craig David was named Man of the Match for his performance, and impressive tackle of Dutch soccer star Jaap Stam, and said: "It was incredible to beat a player like Jaap Stam to the ball - the whole match was something I'll always remember."
Chef Gordon Ramsay, who captained the ROW side, left the pitch after just 11 minutes.
He said: "My hamstring's gone. I could feel it and I can't believe it. We're 1-0 down as well. I think someone up there is trying to tell me not to play football."
Another casualty of the game was referee Pierluigi Collina, who had to be stretchered off and replaced by the sub referee after falling awkwardly on his knee.
The event - which was originally organised by Robbie Williams in 2006 - aimed to raise over £1 million to go towards health, education and medicine in almost 200 countries worldwide.
