Ian Smith's happy Harold

Ian Smith's happy Harold

Ian Smith is "happy" with the way his 'Neighbours' character Harold Bishop is leaving the soap.

The actor - who turns 70 next week - is quitting the programme after playing the Salvation Army saxophonist for over 20 years, but knows he has made the right decision to leave.

He said: "It makes sense because it's what a lot of people do when they reach my age. We are known as 'grey nomads'! Harold is doing what he wants to do, and stopping to smell the roses. I'm totally happy with the way he is leaving - and, of course, he will be popping back every now and then."

Ian also revealed he had mixed reactions from his co-stars when he announced his intention to leave.

He added: "When I told Tom Oliver who plays Lou, he called me a very uncomplimentary name! I told him he should retire too but he didn't like that idea. Possibly my best friend on the show is Jackie Woodburne, who plays Susan, and she broke down when I told her I was going. That was very touching."
