Paul Gascoigne has been axed from 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!'.
The football legend will not appear on this year's edition of the ITV reality show because network bosses have declared him "mentally unfit".
The 42-year-old had already signed a contract to go on the programme but TV executives reportedly got cold feet after he failed a psychological test.
An insider said: "Paul was given a psychiatric test to see how he was, but he failed it. It was such a shame considering bosses had been trying to get him on the show for years.
"However they realised it was just too much of a risk for him to enter the jungle and be under such intense public scrutiny. They don't want another Susan Boyle-style breakdown."
ITV chiefs are now desperately searching for another former footballer to take Gascoigne's place in the Australian jungle in November.
Gascoigne's girlfriend Emma Kate Dawson, 21, is glad the show has rejected him, because she fears the publicity would push him over the edge.
She claims Gascoigne rang her on Wednesday (03.06.09) after an all-day bender and told her he had a knife and was going to kill himself.
She told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "I don't believe he actually wants to die, he's just crying out for help. Enough is enough. He needs sectioning again before it's too late."
Yesterday (04.06.09) it was announced veteran actor Brian Blessed has signed up as a contestant in the series.
