Will Dragons' Den help Hamfatter get to number 1?
Wednesday, 23 July 2008
Over 500 downloads of single in 1 hour following Hamfatter's Den Debut.
Living proof that investment from Dragon's Den can lead to overnight success was indisputably demonstrated when indie group, Hamfatter, sold 1,500 singles following their successful appearance on the popular BBC show on Monday night.
In the hours directly after the show, Play.com reported that the single 'The Girl I Love' was downloaded 755 times between 10pm and midnight using their MP3 download service PlayDigital.
Desperate for backing, Cambridge Indie band, Hamfatter, went in front of the dreaded panel, looking for £75,000 to support the launch of their new album.
Little did they realise that the dream would soon become reality with Peter Jones taking the risk with his funds to produce the new material. Only one catch, Jones will be taking 30% of their royalties, Hamfatter better hope their popularity continues to rise.
Head of music at Play, Helen Marquis, commented "TV is the one medium that can directly relate to instant sales of downloads and such was the case with Hamfatter. It is great to see that independent music can still survive with minimal backing".
