'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson

'Top Gear' to do 'The Italian Job'

Thursday, 23 July 2009

'Top Gear' is to be filmed in a sewer.

The BBC motoring programme will recreate scenes from film 'The Italian Job' when hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond race Mini Coopers through underground water tunnels in Belfast.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed: "We hope to film the race through the city's sewer network in the coming weeks."

The race was suggested by Northern Ireland Water, who looks after six miles of sewers running through the city, which are currently being refurbished to replace the old Victorian system.

A representative for the company said: "We put forward some proposals to the BBC last year and the idea to film a 'Top Gear' episode at the Belfast Sewers Project was developed from there."

'The Italian Job' - which starred Michael Caine - sees a bank robber gang make their getaway in three Minis, driving through the streets, rivers and drains of Italian city Turin, pursued by police. Some traffic scenes for the original 1969 film were actually shot in London.
