Stephen Fry to fight Carol Vorderman for Countdown

Friday, 25 July 2008

It's the final countdown for Des O'Connor as the host of quiz show Countdown, less than two years after he took over from Des Lynam.

Richard Whiteley managed to host the show for a lot longer - over twenty years - before he died in 2005.

Des O'Connor has no intention of retiring and is hoping to host a live entertainment show once his time on Countdown ends.

He told the Daily Mail: "It's been wonderful hosting a programme which is part of TV folklore.

"I've made a lot of new friends. Carol Vorderman has been a joy... it's been a giggle since day one.

"But I miss the thrill of stepping out on a live stage for the one-man concerts and the challenge of live TV entertainment-based shows."

Bookmaker Sky Bet has already installed Stephen Fry as the 6/1 favourite to take the reins in November.

Longstanding co-presenter Carol Vorderman is 10/1 to step into the lead role with the game show host veteran Bruce Forsyth priced at 20/1.

Helen Jacob, Sky Bet spokesperson told MyParkmag: "Stephen Fry is British TV veteran and a favourite with the public. However, Carol Vorderman's long serving role on Countdown may see her now step into the quizmaster chair."
