Lisa Snowdon defends anorexic model
Thursday, 2 July 2009
Lisa Snowdon claims 'Britain's Next Top Model' gave an anorexic contestant "self worth".
The presenter of the UK reality TV show - which sees contestants compete for a modelling contract - has blasted claims the show should not have let Jade McSorley compete, claiming it is actually aiding her recovery.
She said: "We're showing Jade beautiful images of herself and she's starting to love herself.
"It's not like the modelling industry has had this effect on her. She came into it with this eating disorder and she's got some purpose and self-worth now.
"She can see that she is gorgeous and that she does want to be in this industry. A lot of clients have said to us, 'We love her look but she needs to put on a tiny bit of weight'.
"She knows that now and she's working on it. She's feeling empowered. She's seeing she's a beautiful girl and can do herself some favours by putting on weight."
Speaking at the launch of Living TV's latest schedule in London lat night, Jade told BANG Showbiz: "I'm fine, I'm really feeling better thank you. Everything's great at the moment and I'm looking forward to really getting started on my career."
Lisa also warned 'Britain's Next Top Model' show did not take the decision to offer Jade a place lightly, and added the contestant has staff with her at all times to ensure she is eating.
She told Britain's Sun newspaper: "Production checked her and made sure everything was OK. There are people around her all the time making sure that she's eating so there was never any fear."
The 38-year-old star added the issue of models' weight is close to her heart, as she was once told to slim down when she was working in the industry.
She explained: "Unfortunately when I started it was all about grunge and heroin chic. I was told I was too healthy looking but what was I going to do? Draw some dark circles on? And I've got boobs! How was I supposed to hide them?
"It was suggested I go on a diet but I had always been skinny and I was actually really happy that I had more of a womanly figure."
