Gavin and Stacey's Bafta surprise
Monday, 21 April 2008
'Gavin and Stacey' was the surprise winner at last night's (20.04.08) TV Baftas.
The cult BBC3 sitcom - about a whirlwind romance between a boy from Essex and girl from Wales - won the Audience Award for Programme of the Year, beating big-name shows like 'The Apprentice', 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
James Corden - who co-wrote the show with Ruth Jones - was also named Best Comedy Performance for his role as Gavin's best friend Smithy.
Upon collecting his gong from comic Simon Pegg, Cordon said: "That's ridiculous. You'll never, ever know what this means. Not funny, but true."
The night's other big winner was Harry Hill, who was named Best Entertainment Performance for his show 'Harry Hill's TV Burp', which also won the gong for Best Entertainment Programme.
'Holby City' was named Best Serial Drama, beating 'EastEnders', 'Emmerdale' and 'The Bill', during the ceremony at the London Palladium.
Veteran actress Dame Eileen Atkins beat fellow 'Cranford' star Dame Judy Dench to scoop the Best Actress Award, while Andrew Garfield won Best Actor for his portrayal of a juvenile child killer haunted by his past in 'Boy A'.
But the biggest cheer from the audience was saved for veteran entertainer Bruce Forsyth, who collected a Fellowship, the Academy's highest accolade.
Forsyth, 80, was given a standing ovation as he collected his award and said it was "the most wonderful emotional feeling".
The 'Strictly Come Dancing' host added: "This award came as a surprise because the only other light entertainment performers to have won the Fellowship are Morecambe and Wise and Charlie Chaplin."
Other winners included 'Fonejacker', 'Britz', 'Heroes' and 'Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares'.
