Emmerdale - Character comes back from the dead

Friday, 16 May 2008

Keen-eyed Emmerdale viewers will have noticed the recent absence on screen of Edna Birch's beloved dog Tootsie.

This was due to the sad passing of Sky, the Papillion who had played Tootsie since her first appearance on screen in 2002.

However, thanks to Sky's owner Linda Woodrow, a new Papillion Dusty has been cast enabling Tootsie to be reunited with Edna as part of Emmerdale's 5000th episode celebrations on Tuesday 3rd June.

Sky enjoyed success in professional dog shows including a prestigious victory at Cruft's in 2003.

It was this recognition that persuaded her owners to launch her into the television industry where she appeared in My Parents Are Aliens and Heartbeat before landing the role of Tootsie, a character brought in to fill the void left by Edna's first prize pooch Batley.

Sky quickly became a favourite among cast and crew and enjoyed a particularly close bond with Shirley Stelfox who worked with her on many storylines including Edna's hit and run accident in June 2004 and the scandalous cross-breeding with the Dingles' dog Alfie in March 2007.

Dusty inherits a much-loved character whose return is sure to bring a smile to the face of many an Emmerdale fan, either canine or otherwise.
