Tonight - McDonalds vs Marks & Spencer
Friday, 2 May 2008
At a time when Britain is fighting a national epidemic on obesity, the news that McDonald's is back in the good books with consumers is a depressing prospect to its fiercest critics.
Last year, UK sales were up six per cent. In December, the burger chain sold 88 million meals. For the first time in years, the company is opening new outlets across Britain.
It's a tremendous comeback for the company considering just a few years ago it was battling unflattering portrayals by documentaries like Super Size Me – where Morgan Spurlock became ill after living solely on McDonald's food for a month.
A move towards healthier living was blamed for the company's British profits taking a massive nosedive.
In Big Mac Fights Back: Tonight, Fiona Foster interviews Steve Easterbrook, the UK chief executive of McDonald's, on how the company has turned its fortunes around by remodelling everything from its high-street décor to its supply chain.
And she also talks to the critics that say McDonald's is still guilty of targeting kids through advertising.
Nutritionist Amanda Ursell also looks at how the restaurant's food measures up in terms of calories, fat and salt compared to lunchtime favourites at Pret A Manger and Marks & Spencer
This episode is on ITV1, Friday 2 May 2008 @ 8-8.30pm.
