The Deadliest Catch - King Crab trawler

Deadliest Catch - Heading out to sea

Friday, 16 May 2008

It's the deadliest job in the world: crab fishing off the Alaska coast in the icy Bering Sea, home of the most violent waters on earth.

But the rewards are great. Deadliest Catch returns for a new series following the handful of adventurers battling Arctic weather, brutal waves, and a ticking clock for a chance at big money in this modern-day gold rush.

Working around the clock, and often going days without sleep, this unique breed of men - part adventurer, part fisherman - set out upon an unforgettable odyssey. There are new rules for this king crab season.

The risks have doubled but so have the rewards. It used to be a five-day race to the finish but now it's a three-week marathon.

And the fleet is reduced from 250 to 89. The Captains gather in Dutch Harbor for their last night on land but receive a weather warning.

And they were due to leave on a Friday: a bad day for the superstitious fishermen. But the Time Bandit sets off after performing a ritual to counteract bad luck.

Captain Jonathon plans to have all 137 pots in the water before the rest of the fleet arrive. But the first pots to come in are almost empty.

This episode is on CHANNEL 4, Sunday 18 May 2008 @ 8-9pm.
