Graeme Hawley amazed at popularity
Wednesday, 25 November 2009
'Coronation Street' star Graeme Hawley is amazed his character is popular with the public.
The actor - who plays former jailbird John Stape in the ITV soap - says he is shocked by the reaction he gets when he's out and about but puts that down to John being married to lovable factory worker Fiz.
He said: "The fans like Fiz and want to see her happy. They can see that she really loves John and there's potential for her to be settles with him - so as a result, people have been pretty supportive of John."
Graeme also believes John is popular because he kidnapped Rosie Webster, a character fans love to hate.
He told Inside Soap magazine: "Abducting Rosie doesn't seem to count as a really terrible crime. I actually get more people shouting, 'Why did you let her out?' than anything else!"
In the show, John faces the prospect of returning to prison after Rosie falsely accuses him of attacking her.
