'Coronation Street' writer Shakespeare
Friday, 24 April 2009
Katherine Kelly thinks William Shakespeare would write 'Coronation Street' if he were still alive.
The actress - who plays barmaid Becky Granger in the soap - said she loves the 16th century bard's plays because they are full of scandal and outrage and have messages that appeal to everyone - just like the ITV programme she stars in.
She told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "Many people say if he was alive today, Shakespeare would be writing for Corrie. The more I think about it the more I think that is right.
"He wrote to entertain people in a cold and plague-ridden London. When I was at school I thought Shakespeare was for posh people.
"But it is the most saucy, lewd, dirty stuff - it really is. It is outrageous. And Becky is like that. She is outrageous and dirty."
The actress was a member of the Royal Shakespeare company before she joined 'Coronation Street' and says she loves how people react when they see she was a member of the prestigious drama group.
She added: "I would walk into an audition with blonde hair and a Yorkshire accent and they think, 'Oh she's quite sweet'. But then they see that I have played the lead at the RSC and their eyes open a little wider."
