Liz Dawn´s smoking relief

Coronation Street - Liz Dawn´s smoking relief

Tuesday, 5 February 2008

'Coronation Street' legend Liz Dawn claims she would be dead if she hadn't given up smoking five years ago.

The 68-year-old actress was forced to quit the soap, after playing Vera Duckworth for 32 years, after suffering from lung disease emphysema.

But she realised it was the best thing to do because her health was suffering.

Talking to interviewer Sir Trevor McDonald, she said: "I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for the medication I'm on. You know you're not right when you only have to see steps and you have a trauma ? it's if you have to do things over and over again, and especially the cobbles.

"The cobbles on that street, honestly! We could do three rehearsals and two takes and I'd be sat on the steps in one of the houses. I couldn't get my breath."

Liz, who smoked 30 cigarettes a day for 50 years, also revealed she feels guilty about smoking around her non-smoking castmates.

She added: "There are a lot of non-smokers in 'Coronation Street' that I stood next to and smoked. It must have been awful."
