Bill Tarmey's reduced workload

Bill Tarmey's reduced workload

Tuesday, 19 May 2009

Bill Tarmey is to have his 'Coronation Street' workload reduced in a storyline which sees his character fall for a millionairess.

The 68-year-old actor - who has played widower Jack Duckworth for 30 years - will be given less airtime as he struggles to cope with the show's hectic schedule.

A new plot line will see Jack stunned when he realises new love Connie Rathbone - played by Rita May - is so wealthy after she finally allows him to see his luxury home and asks him to move in.

Jack will then be seen on screen less as he spends more time with Connie.

A source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "She's embarrassed but only because she feels unworthy of such riches and fears he'll dump her if the truth comes out.

Bill will come and go as he feels able. We'd hate the idea of him quitting so this explanation for his absence is just perfect."

Earlier this year, Bill admitted he was unsure how much longer he would stay in the soap.

He said: "I don't know when I will decide the time is right to call it a day. It could be one, two, three years' time. I am 68 and it depends on how I feel and on my health.

"At the moment Granada cannot do enough for me. I would like to spend a bit more time in Tenerife enjoying the warmth. I feel after 40 years in the business I have earned it."
