The Britain's Got Talent judge never expected to find so many talented acts.
It is thought that several of the acts will be offered recording contracts in the next few weeks.
He revealed all to the Britain's Got Talent cameras just after the final.
"There were 5 or 6 people who could have won it.
"The fact that Faryl for example didn't make the top three just shows you how good the standard of the competition was.
"And it's probably good that a non-singer did win, otherwise all the non-singers are going to think 'Why do we bother competing.' It just throws it wide open again for next year."
Simon thinks the show proves that Britain is world class: "What it tells me most importantly is that Britain has got talent.
"If you had asked me three days into the auditions I would have said I'm on the verge of cancelling the entire show...it was that bad...everyone was dreadful.
"And then I think the fourth day it all changed and then you see a final like tonight."
He added: "In my opinion some of those acts were world class tonight. So it has been worthwhile, it makes everyone feel good."
