Paula Abdul quits 'American Idol'

Paula Abdul has left 'American Idol'.

The 47-year-old singer ended weeks on speculation on Tuesday (04.08.09), when she confirmed she will not return to judge the ninth season of the US TV talent show.

She wrote on her Twitter blog: "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to 'Idol'. I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon.

"What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. I do, without any doubt, have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all (sic)."

Paula did not specify why she had decided not to return to the show, and her representative would only confirm she had left.

She was due to begin taping the new series tomorrow (06.08.09) in Denver, alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.

Paula's contract with the show ended after the last series, and her manager recently admitted there was no new contract being discussed.

Show host Ryan Seacrest was quick to respond to the news, writing on his Twitter page: "About to go to sleep when I started seeing my blackberry blow up. I have read what u have read and I am shocked and saddened about Paula (sic)."

Fox TV said in a statement: "Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she's a tremendous talent and we wish her the best."
