Quentin Tarantino's finger edit
Monday, 10 August 2009
Quentin Tarantino wrote 'Inglourious Basterds' with one finger.
The director insists on making script writing as difficult a process as possible in order to put together the best dialogue he possibly can.
He explained: "The script was pecked with one finger. I can't type. I did it with the second finger of my right hand on a 1987 word processor. It was very important for me to do it with one finger.
"You write, write, write with a pen and you always overwrite. But when you have to translate it to just one finger, a really strong editing process takes over. Basically, if you don't think this s**t is the bomb, you're not going to spend time typing the final draft with one finger.
"So you're constantly correcting and you actually shrink it down."
Quentin is so particular about his scripts, he refuses to let actors improvise on any scenes.
He added to Esquire magazine: "I have no problems telling actors, 'Look, I want you to learn every if, and or but in this screenplay. We might loosen it up as we go, but I wrote everything in the order it is for a reason.
"I want them to know how serious I am about the words."
