Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr.

Iron Man: The Future

Monday, 6 October 2008

'Iron Man' director Jon Favreau has told fans what to expect from the movie's sequel.

Favreau explained Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as Iron Man/ Tony Stark, but writers are still working on a possible villain for the follow-up.

Favreau - who revealed he is working with 'Tropic Thunder' co-writer Justin Theroux on the new movie - said: "We're playing with who the villain should be and what we should incorporate from the comic book. And how it will lead into 'The Avengers'.

"The sequel is shaping up to incorporate Tony's vision for the future. What happens after he says 'I am Iron Man?' I focus mostly on story and character. I put a great value on emotion, humour and natural dialogue. The effects are fun to explore in original ways, but without a strong story, they mean nothing."

The director also spoke about the possibility of Iron Man's arch enemy The Mandarin returning in the sequel.

He added: "Mandarin is still an important figure in the Iron Man universe. We have an interesting take on him that allows us to incorporate the whole pantheon of villains."

However, Favreau, 41, also hinted he is open to suggestions for future villains.

When asked if he would ever consider employing comic book character Madame Masque in the film, he replied: "Female villain... Now there's an interesting notion!"
