Charlotte Gainsbourg's dream role
Wednesday, 22 July 2009
Charlotte Gainsbourg had "dreamt" of working with Lars von Trier.
The 'Antichrist' actress - who won the Best Actress accolade at this year's Cannes Film Festival for her role in the gruesome horror movie - was thrilled to work under such a "provocative" director in the bloodied erotic film.
She said: "Of course I had seen Lars's films and I was just dreaming of working with him. Lars has a way of being provocative. You can see that he enjoys that."
However, the 37-year-old actress - who had no problems appearing fully naked in the movie - said it was the Danish director's vulnerability from his clinical depression which convinced her to strip off for the role and appear in a number of compromising positions.
She explained to Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "He couldn't hold the camera because he was shaking too much. He seemed so vulnerable that I wanted to give him exactly what he wanted; to go the whole way for him."
"The strangling scene was also very painful. That felt like a very long struggle for me. And that is where, for the first time, I saw a little glimpse of pleasure in Lars's eyes. I wasn't sure I wanted to see that. But at the end of it Lars came up to me and said: 'I know you feel very bad, Charlotte. But all my actors always feel like that.' "
