Avril Lavigne concert axed

Friday, 22 August 2008

Avril Lavigne has cancelled her Malaysian concert.

The 'Girlfriend' singer came under pressure to scrap the show, which was scheduled for next week, after she was branded "too sexy" by an Islamic youth group.

All concerts that take place in Malaysia are subject to strict guidelines aimed at upholding Muslim values and, after listening to arguments put forward by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry agreed that the show was unsuitable and it has been cancelled.

Promoters say they had already sold half of the tickets for the concert, which was also deemed to be taking place too close to the country's Independence Day on August 31.

Beyonce Knowles cancelled a show in the area last year following similar protests. To go to our Beyonce Photo Gallery click here >

Gwen Stefani was forced to cover up for a concert in Kuala Lumpur last August after Islamic groups in Malaysia branded her "too racy".

Female artists must be covered from the top of their chests to their knees and can't wear clothes featuring offensive messages or images referring to sex or drugs.

They are banned from shouting, hugging or kissing during their performance and must not throw anything into the audience.

In 2006, a music promoter was reportedly fined $3,200 because a Pussycat Dolls concert was deemed too racy.
