Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play an assassin on the run from the Mafia.

The 'Revolutionary Road' actor is said to be in talks with movie studio New Regency to produce and star in an adaptation of Josh Bazell's novel 'Beat The Reaper'.

The story focuses on a New York doctor who is recognised as a former hitman by a member of the mob, blowing the cover provided to him by the Witness Protection Program.

No director or screenwriter has been announced.

Leonardo is currently embroiled in a busy schedule of upcoming projects including a part in an adaptation of Aldous Huxley novel 'Brave New World' as John the savage and the titular role in presidential biopic 'The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt'.

His latest movie 'Revolutionary Road' - in which he re-teams with his 'Titanic' co-star Kate Winslet - is released worldwide on January 30.
