Sex and the City Premiere – Kim Cattrall dishes the dirt
Thursday, 29 May 2008
Kim Cattrall has finally watched Sex and the City: The Movie.
Kim didn't watch the film at the World premiere in London two weeks ago but saw it for the first time at the New York premiere.
She plays man-eating Samantha Jones in the film about the friendship of four very different women.
She told the Associated Press Television News: "I am so happy to be home.
"Tonight I feel like a virgin in the sense that I am seeing it for the first time with an audience."
Cynthia Nixon, who plays lawyer Miranda Hobbes added: "For so long people have been asking us about the film and what happens.
"I am so excited about people actually being able to see it - and being able to come up to me and talk to me about it - rather than asking me about it and me not being able to tell them."
Despite the wet weather hundreds of fans lined the streets to see their favourite stars.
Kristin Davis (Charlotte York in the film) couldn't believe so many turned out: "We've got this crazy weather so there is like added electricity in the air.
"We were all worried about our fans but they are die-hard New Yorkers and they can take anything,"
Lead actress, Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw) was overcome with emotion and told reporters that it was "one of the great nights in my professional career".
She told Reuters: "Those people who like the show will expect the joy and the good times and the whimsy and the clothes and the cocktails and the salty language.
"But what they might not expect is that the shank of the movie is pretty sad,"
It is not known what the stars of the show will think of the critics' comments following the premiere.
The Village Voice reviewer writes: "Sex and the City: Plotless and Pointless"
"Less a movie than a very long goodbye, at 142 minutes, Sex and the City is basically a whole season's worth of episodes – or out takes – slung together for no better reason than to squeeze all remaining revenues from a stupendously popular show that got out while the going was good."
The Variety reviewer is less harsh but feels the movie didn't do the series justice: "For a series so steeped in romance, the eagerly awaited Sex and the City movie feels a trifle half-hearted.
"Although there's pleasure in seeing HBO's fabulous four reunited, writer-director Michael Patrick King doesn't fully bridge the gap between TV and film – delivering major story flourishes but, too often, playing like a regular episode bloated to five times its customary length."
The film did receive some positive reviews, The New York Daily News gave it four out of five stars: "Just like the show, the movie is unabashedly enamoured of what Carrie calls 'the two L's: labels and love'. But what really makes this story run is an F-word - and no, Samantha fans, it's not that one.
"The movie's beating heart is the friendship between the women, who had found some sort of happiness by the show's 2004 finale. Now they're all at a personal crossroads and need one another more than ever."
