Robert Downey Jr. wanted to star in a comedy because he finds life too serious.
The 43-year-old actor, who appears alongside Jack Black in new movie 'Tropic Thunder', was keen to relax and have fun on the big screen.
He said: "Life is too goddamn serious. Things are scary! I got to laugh my a*s off in this movie. I'll take that over rocket science any day. And I'll certainly take that over self-important dramatist."
In the movie, Robert plays Kirk Lazarus - an Oscar-winning actor who darkens his skin to portray an African-American Vietnam soldier in a production.
Jack is full of praise for Robert, insisting 'Tropic Thunder' has given him the opportunity to showcase his comic timing.
He added to MTV.com: "I think this is going to be a big coming-out party for him as a comedian. You knew he was a great actor with 'Chaplin', but all of the films he has made were great dramatic films. This is the first one where it's been full-blown comedy, and his skills are sharp."
'Tropic Thunder', which also stars Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise, is currently showing in the US and can be seen in Europe next month.
