Michelle Williams misses Heath Ledger at Cannes

Michelle Williams has been enjoying being back with her Hollywood friends in Cannes but she must be missing her ex-fiancé Heath Ledger.

Heath died in January of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Their daughter Matilda was two years old at the time.

Shortly after his death a source told BANG showbiz: "Matilda is too young to know why her father isn't around anymore. Michelle and the family are showering Matilda with love right now to cushion it so she isn't really aware. Michelle basically told Matilda, 'Daddy went away.' Matilda still doesn't grasp it."

Michelle has appeared on the red carpet for the first time since Heath's death. Two of her films are being shown at Cannes, 'Wendy and Lucy' and 'Synedoche, New York.'

During the premiere of 'Wendy and Lucy' she tried her best to concentrate on promoting the film rather than talking about her loss. The Dawsons Creek star told People magazine: "It actually does feel kind of special to have two films at the same time."

Michelle is grateful to Martin Scorsese who is directing her in her latest film 'Shutter Island.' She wasn't due to be at Cannes this year as they are still filming. Luckily for Michelle: "He was sweet enough to let me come here and enjoy it."

Little Matilda did not travel to Cannes with her mum unlike the children of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Michelle likes to keep Matilda out of the limelight and has instead decided to keep the visit brief. She will be flying out again in less than 48 hours.

The young actress is glad she made it to this years Cannes: "[It's] something you can look back on at the end of your life and think, 'That was a cool thing I did when I was 27.' "

It is rumoured that Michelle had wanted to stay away this year but changed her mind at the last minute. A spokesperson from 'Wendy and Lucy' explained to People: ""It was decided on Monday night that she could come to Cannes, and she got on the next plane to arrive just in time to get dressed and come to our premiere.

"She came in and had a long nap and then came to the screening."
