Arson attack destroys Madonna's childhood home
Wednesday, 2 July 2008
The Detroit home in which pop superstar Madonna grew up has been burnt to the ground following a suspected arson attack.
The singer lived in the Rochester Hills home with her parents and five siblings before moving to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a ballet dancer, before eventually becoming a megastar.
A woman driving in the neighborhood reportedly noticed smoke coming from behind the two-story brick house and called the emergency services.
And when firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the side of the roof.
Local Fire Chief Ron Crowell told the Detroit Free Press newspaper: " The fire appears to have started in the living room. We brought it under control in about 10 minutes," adding: "There was significant loss."
An anonymous neighbour also told the newspaper that even after Madonna gained fame she would sometimes return to the Oklahoma Avenue home.
