Manure dumped on Ramsay's doorstep
Thursday, 17 May 2007
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has had one tonne of manure dumped on the doorstep of one of his plush London restaurants.
Gordon, whose foul-mouthed rants have landed him in trouble before on his TV show the F-Word, was this time targeted by animal rights activists complaining that the chef had cooked horse meat.
Protestors from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) decided that the TV show, which had journalist and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter cooking and serving horse meat, was not to their taste and slammed it as a ratings-grabbing "gimmick".
They then dumped the manure on the step of Ramsay's Claridge's restaurant.
Anita Singh of Peta Europe complained: "Will it be a family dog next? Chickens, pigs, cows and horses all suffer fear and discomfort when they are robbed of their lives for nothing more than a fleeting taste or a TV rating."
A spokesman for the F-Word explained that horse meat is perfectly legal to eat in the UK, however, he admitted that "while the item includes a visit to rural France, where sales of horse meat are rising, it does not extend to a discussion on animals being transported beyond their country of origin".
