'Home Alone' creator John Hughes has died.
The legendary director and film writer - who worked on a string of hit movies in the 80s and 90s, including 'The Breakfast Club', 'Sixteen Candles', 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and 'Uncle Buck' - passed away aged 59 after suffering a heart attack while walking in New York yesterday (06.08.09).
He had been visiting family in Manhattan.
Macaulay Culkin - who starred in 'Home Alone' - was quick to offer his condolences, saying: "I was a fan of both his work and a fan of him as a person. The world has lost not only a quintessential filmmaker whose influence will be felt for generations, but a great and decent man."
A host of other stars who have worked with Hughes have also paid tribute to the filmmaker.
Molly Ringwald, who played Claire Standish in 'The Breakfast Club' and Samantha Baker in 'Sixteen Candles', said: "I am stunned and incredibly sad. He was and will always be such an important part of my life.
"He will be missed - by me and by everyone that he has touched. My heart and all my thoughts are with his family now."
Matthew Broderick, who played the lead role in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', was also devastated to hear of Hughes' passing.
He said: "I am truly shocked and saddened by the news about my old friend John Hughes. He was a wonderful, very talented guy and my heart goes out to his family."
Matthew's 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' co-star Ben Stein, who played the grouchy economics teacher who called the register in the movie, added: "He made a better connection with young people than anyone in Hollywood had ever made before or since.
"It's incredibly sad. He was a wonderful man, a genius, a poet. I don't think anyone has come close to him as being the poet of the youth of America in the post-war period. He was to them what Shakespeare was to the Elizabethan Age.
"You had a regular guy - just an ordinary guy. If you met him, you would never guess he was a big Hollywood power."
The last movie John directed was 1991's 'Curly Sue'.
